Lately, I’ve been hearing a lot of fun runs or events that are organized for the benefit of the mangroves. Magroves are various types of trees and shrubs that basically grow along the coast. The Philippines is rich with them… at least we used to be. The mangrove forest in our country does not only beautify the Philippines, but it also serves as a home to many of our beloved animals. Unfortunately, according to mangroveactionproject.org, about half of mangrove loss has occurred in the past two decades due to shrimp farming, tourism, urbanization, roadways, etc.
“The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a network of several conservation groups, has set alarm bells ringing by warning that more than one in six mangrove species worldwide are in danger of extinction due to coastal development and other factors, including climate change, logging and agriculture. We have already lost over half of the world’s original mangrove forest area, estimated at 32 million hectares (app. 80 million acres). In 2007, less than 15 million hectares (37 million acres) of mangroves remain.(mangroveprojectaction.org)”
So what do you say we pitch in and help in Mother Nature’s struggles?
