A huge percentage of the children entering our classrooms today suffer from a learning disability or have a special need. There is oftentimes at least 1 child in our class who is going through this. As their teacher, how are we to addressed these needs? Do we know the right way to act? Can we spot the red flags? Can we at least learn to understand these children?

The goal of this seminar is to be able to help teachers understand children with special needs, to know the red flags on children with special needs, to learn and reflect on new teaching strategies on special education and last but not least, to effectively manage physical, behavioral and learning challenges.

A. Understanding the Individual Differences: Overview of Children with Special Needs (9:00am to 12:00nn)

- Learning Barriers arising physical disabilities, emotional and behavioral problems
Speaker: Ms. Lady M. Suarez
She is a senior occupational therapist consultant of the Therapeutic Intervention for Kids, Therapy Works and the Neurodevelopmental Center of St. Luke’s Medical Center. She is also part of the Board of Directors of the Occupational Therapy Association of the Philippines.
B. Managing Students’ Special Needs (1:00pm to 4:00pm)
Strategies to assist teachers in handling children with special needs in:
- effective communication
- classroom management
- managing pupil’s behavior
- fostering active involvement
Speaker: Ms. Alice Sibal-Lim
An expert in special education, Ms. Alice Sibal-Lim provides developmental psychology and educational counseling. She is also one of the few psychological practitioners in Dynamic Assessment/Instrumental Enrichment. She is a proponent of the Adlerian Approach to psychotherapies. Her counseling sessions focus on attachment, emotional, behavioral disorders and neurodevelopmental disabilities and abilities.
