It's always fun to play with shapes! You can always come up with a random things just by putting them all together. For our theme on family, we decided to play with some shapes and make a picture with daddy! - This activity not only puts the children's imagination to a test, but it also gives us teachers the opportunity to start a small conversation with our students about their relationships with either their mom or dad. Bib Necklace of Family Members
by Cheryl Villareal on Feb 11th, 2011
There are so many activities that come to mind when you think of FAMILIES, however, we try not to be too redundant else risk our students getting bored. - We wondered what activity we could do that would make the children more aware of the number of people in their families, as well as recognize the roles each one plays. We thought of several ideas, but none which really made us say, "This is it!"... until... - My co-teacher told me a...Read More » Tags Share Comments (0 )

Family Tree in Preschool
by Cheryl Villareal on Feb 7th, 2011
When learning about our families, the family tree is one lesson or activity that we just couldn't miss out on. A family tree making activity can be done for all ages, from preschool to high school. It is one activity that would simply differ in the process it is made. So for my toddler class, what's the best way for the kids to make it? - My partner and I were discussing how we were to let the children make their family trees. Should we ask...Read More » Tags Share Comments (3 )

Draw a Family Portrait
by Cheryl Villareal on Feb 3rd, 2011
This January, we are learning all about our families. So after telling the kids a story about families, we decided to let them draw their own. - Children's drawings are more important than most think. To some, their drawings might just look like random scribbles, to others, they might just look like normal drawings of a 3 year old child, but what most fail to realize is how the tiniest bit of detail is already a window to the child's feelin...Read More » Tags Share Comments (1 )

Paper Tearing Orange
by Cheryl Villareal on Jan 21st, 2011
Though not most people know it, paper tearing is actually an important skill toddlers need to learn. It is through this that they eventually learn to cut, write and draw. For our lesson on the color orange, we decided to let the kids try some paper tearing as well. We did not realize it immediately, but it turned out that several of our kids still did not know how to tear paper. Most of them still needed us to help them hold the paper as they ...Read More » Tags Share Comments (2 )

Fruit and Vegetable Stamping
by Cheryl Villareal on Jan 18th, 2011
I don't think it's right to play with food and put it to waste. But if playing with it means the kids get to go through a unique learning experience, then I don't think it was wasted at all. After having our fun making fruit kebab and vegetable salads, it was time to use the leftover fruits and vegetables for some art! This stamping activity is so easy to do that you can just leave the kids to do it as they please! Be sure to select fruits ...Read More » Tags Share Comments (0 )

Vegetable Salad for the Kids
by Cheryl Villareal on Jan 15th, 2011
Ever tried letting kids eat their vegetables? Talk about a challenge! I used to trick my kids into eating their veggies by cutting it really small and covering it with lots of rice before feeding them! Just a small peak of the color green on their spoon would be chaotic! ...still, it doesn't hurt to try, and we did just that! We tried to let our kids eat their healthy vegetables by having a vegetable salad making activity in class! They had a ...Read More » Tags Share Comments (1 )

Face of Shapes
by Cheryl Villareal on Jan 12th, 2011
Playing around with shapes can be a lot of fun! Children are able to exercise their imagination skills and come up with a variety of pictures using nothing but basic shapes! Shapes can be useful and fun, but teachers have to be careful as to how complex the activity will be depending on the age of the kids. When my tutee was just 6 years old, she came home complaining that she had no idea what her math homework was about. Apparently, her teach...Read More » Tags Share Comments (0 )
